After months of work starting before the CCC7, Light house lighters team launched door collection of source segregated solid waste two weeks ago from 160 homes at Nochikuppam with the splendid support of Chennai Corporation and Ramky Enviro, the private conservancy agency for this part of Chennai. We had Mayor, MLA, Zonal officer, Ramky zone manager, all of whom and all next level officials were very glad to support and partner with CTC in the tough task of convincing people about source segregation.

We have been measuring waste collection daily and its hovering around 120 kgs with 80-20-20 being the proportion of wet-dry-reject waste. Wet waste is being composted at the Mylapore burial ground site provided by the corporation and dry waste is being sent for recycling saving almost 100 kgs of waste every single day.
Light house Volunteers have been going everyday along with local volunteers for door collection since this is the initial period. We are giving rating to every household in a 4 points school. And through start performer local volunteer support we are meeting under performers. Thats how we improving segregation and reducing the 20% reject waste even further. We are also planning to separately collect and compost the nutrient rich raw sea food waste. The sanitation in the surroundings has improved hugely as people in the A block have mostly gotten rid of the habit of littering through windows (a characteristic of most slum colonies and main reason for the hygiene problems and diseases there).

As the pics here show, local volunteers are starting to take over the mantle. They have been actually praising us for creating an opportunity for them all to work together. They have developed a sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm for the zero waste project so much so that in short notice and in just ten minutes all volunteers assembly at one floor like they did thrice in the last one week for the planning of Sunday success meeting (details follow) and tree plantation. We will expanding soon to the rest of the four blocks containing 450 more homes and would save almost half a tonne waste every day from landfills. The success meet of A block to be would serve as the launch pad for the same. The light house lighters team welcomes you all to take part in the meet and spread the zero waste effort to all areas of Chennai.
